Privacy Policy for Bird Tracker

1. Introduction

Bird Tracker ("the App") is developed by Ant BioCode ("we", "us", "our"). This privacy policy explains how the App handles your data. We are committed to protecting your privacy — the App is designed to work entirely offline and does not collect, transmit, or share any personal information.

2. Data We Collect

We do not collect any personal data. All data created within the App stays on your device and is never transmitted to our servers or any third party. The App accesses and/or collects the following data locally:

  • Precise location data (GPS coordinates) — The App uses your device's GPS sensor to record your geographic coordinates (latitude, longitude, and altitude) for mapping bird observation positions. This data is stored locally on your device and is never sent to our servers or any third party.
  • Background location data — When you activate a transect recording session, the App continues to access your device's GPS location in the background (i.e., when the App is not in the foreground or the screen is off). This is necessary to continuously record your walking path (transect track) without interruption while you observe birds in the field. The background location data collected consists of periodic GPS coordinates (latitude, longitude, altitude, and timestamp) that form your transect route. All background location data is stored exclusively on your device in a local database and is never transmitted to any server, cloud service, or third party. Background location access is only active during an ongoing transect recording session and stops when you end the session.
  • Transect and observation data — All tracks, species observations, and field notes are stored locally in an on-device database.
  • Email address — If you choose to set an email address in settings for exporting track data, it is stored only in your device's local preferences and is never sent to us.

3. Data Storage

All App data is stored locally on your device using an embedded database. No data is stored on external servers. If you uninstall the App, all locally stored data will be deleted.

4. Data Sharing

The App does not automatically share any data. You may choose to export and share track data manually using the device's share functionality or by sending it via email. In such cases, the data leaves your device only through the method you explicitly choose.

5. Third-Party Services

The App uses the following third-party service:

  • Google Maps — Used to display maps within the App. Google Maps may collect certain data as described in Google's Privacy Policy. We do not control data collected by Google Maps.

6. Permissions

The App requests the following device permissions:

  • Location (Fine & Coarse) — Required to record precise GPS coordinates of bird observations and display your current position on the map. Used only while the App is in the foreground during normal operation.
  • Background Location (ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION) — Required to continuously record your transect walking path when the App is running in the background or when the screen is turned off. This permission is essential for field ornithologists who need uninterrupted GPS track recording during bird surveys. The App will ask you for this permission separately, and you can choose to deny it — in that case, GPS tracking will pause when the App goes to the background. Background location data is stored only on your device and is never shared with any server or third party.
  • Foreground Service (Location type) — Used to keep the GPS tracking service running during active transect recording sessions.
  • Internet — Required solely to load Google Maps tiles for map display. No user data is sent over the internet.
  • Storage — Used for importing KML boundary files and exporting track data.

7. Children's Privacy

The App does not knowingly collect any personal information from children. Since no personal data is collected from any user, the App is safe for use by individuals of all ages.

8. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
